As a nurse who has watched people die in respiratory distress from covid, I'm usually highly unsympathetic to the wet dross that say they can't breathe with a mask on and other such trite nonsense. If I can wear full Level 2 PPE for a 13 hour shift, you can wear a cloth mask in Tesco.

However, I do have some sympathy with business owners who may literally be going to the wall because of covid restrictions. If you're going to lose the roof over your head and can't feed your family, you are desperate. And desperate people are easily taken in by the idea that by putting a piece of paper in the window with pseudo-magic words, your problems are solved.

Sad thing is unlike the median feckless FMoTL nutters, these people have a lot more to lose.

However, when you're holding the hand of someone who is struggling to breathe and dying, sobbing because they can't see their Mum, and have just been declined an ICU bed... you realise there are some things more important than money. Trying to stop people dying in a particularly humiliating and undignified way key among them.

And that is the crux. Forget this "average age 82" nonsense. Dying because you can't breathe is a horrible way to go, no matter what your age.

Well said.

I have great respect for people who do your job, its not something I think I could ever do.

Thank you for being there.

Having had bad pneumonia a while back that dropped my O2 levels to circa 70% (while just laying in bed), I can't imagine how much worse it must feel at that level.

It must be distressing to have to witness such things, but that does not mean that your value judgements are correct for everyone. Many people would choose quality of life, including solvency and freedom to live their lives over a small chance of dying a horrible death - except that they are denied the opportunity to make such a choice.

To what extent is it appropriate to tank the economy in order to save X number of lives? At what point does tanking the economy actually cost lives due to not having the money available to properly fund the NHS?

I don't think any of that is in doubt, of course ultimately the decision on how to balance the two is a political one, not helped by coming under 4 different political regimes for the 4 regions but with overall strategy for other factors only coming from one.

Viral hardship v Economic hardship.

You have to account in the VH for not just deaths (very very low mortality for the under 60's, significantly higher for the over 60's -which make up just under 20% of the population, while over 65's make up over 16% of the UK workforce) but also the'long covid' impacts which impacts the younger people just as much and how that also impacts sufferers economically personally and for the country going forward.

Then of course you have people who have such a low IQ and complete disregard for others that they cannot be helped.

In a shop in Dundee recently 2 ladies pushing kids in buggies said "We don't wear or masks in shops...but it's OK because we're holding them...look" FFS.

Why is there never a virus that kills off the low IQ people?

Not a virus, but if you have a look at the Darwin Awards, you'll find plenty of low IQ people who have managed to spectacularly kill themselves.

And life expectancy in Dundee is not great.

It's not low IQ people, my son has learning difficulties and thus would have a low IQ has sailed through the pandemic by his inbuilt cautious nature and by following rules. What you are referring too is stupid people who, from personal experience, can have high IQs.

Indeed, I highly recommend The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity by economist Carlo M. Cipolla, it's illuminating.

Indeed. Some would point to the current cabinet, but I couldn't possibly comment

And to think there was a chance (a very slim one) that we could have faced this pandemic with an imbecile Jeremy Corbyn in charge icon_hang.gif

You only have to look at the Old Etonians ruinning the country to prove that point.

I adopted the term from cp8759's post (which was quoted in my post), and simply assumed he meant stupid people (which is apparently a far less offensive term as it is more subjective).
