Hi folks.

Coming home from a camping trip on the A66 today.

Dual carriageway section going East towards the Richmond section.

I was doing an indicated 80mph exactly... came up to the brow of the dual carraige way when at the top was a speed camera van with window open pointing our way. I did slow to 70mph when I spotted him.

My question is this: at what speed do they pull the trigger? Is it NSL + 10% + 2 MPH? Ie 79 MPH?

I was being tail gated by another car behind me with the inside lane doing only slightly slower than us.

My indicated 80mph may be 78mph on an accurate read?

Thanks in advance.

79 would be the normal start of enforcement in a 70.

The tail gating vehicle is no defence should you receive a NIP.

Thanks.

I didn't mean it was my excuse. Just mentioned it as he was going just as fast as me.

So 50/50 if an NIP is issued and a 14 day wait?

They can set it at whatever speed they like, but enforcement will start at 79.

Thanks for your input.

Sorry I'm unsure what you mean?

So if I was doing 78mph I may be ok?

Enforcement starts at 79, so as 78 is less than 79, no no action would be taken.

Not sure what you mean by trigger speed? The operator will pull the trigger and taking a speed reading if he believes the target vehicle is speeding.

I'm thinking it's been answered - at what speed (in a 70mph zone) what speed would cause the NIP to be issued?

Would 79/80mph qualify for a SAC?

Yes, anything up 86 MPH should get an offer. Unless the offence was in Scotland or you previously did the same course type within 3 years.

Because it's not an "active" case, i.e. you haven't received a NIP.

Also it seems from your description that you weren't breaking the limit from a speed camera point of view so very unlikely to get a NIP.

As people in the inside lane seem to broadly stick to the speed limit now that supports that view seeing as at 79+ you word have been passing them with a notable differential.

Just to summarise what has already been said - 79 in a 70 limit is the usual starting point for prosecution (78 is likely to be ignored).

Many speedos over-record slightly so you may have been doing less than 79 if the speedo recorded 80.

A course is usually offered up to 86.
