What do we think?
Some observations: For it to be careless, it has to fall below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver. For it to be without reasonable consideration, some other person actually has to be inconvenienced. -------------------- Moderator

As a cyclist I generally filter on the left hand side of the lane appropriate for the direction of travel. If the left lane is for turning left and going straight ahead then it’s perfectly safe to filter on the left. -------------------- Andy

This thread was bad enough when it was about the MLOC, PLEASE don't turn it into yet another, even more tedious, car vs. bicycle thread! Not to mention tractors, cyclists, council waste collection vehicles, parcel delivery vans, buses, ... Suddenly I'm starting to see the attraction of this "get out of the way or it's careless" notion. You did the turning on this one Fredd! -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

You did the turning on this one Fredd! They were just examples of slow vehicles - it's not like I was having a go at cyclists, any more than I was at the likes of waste collection vehicles also going about their business! -------------------- Regards,

I'm seeing a lot more police taking action from what I can see on Twitter to stop middle lane hoggers. Good on them. Many are saying on Twitter that they followed cars for miles on a completely empty road without even noticing there was a police car in the back before they turned their blue's on and pulled them over!
I am very worried about being called out for undertaking when passing these naughties on the inside! This post has been edited by speedfighter23: Mon, 2 Dec 2019 - 20:42 -------------------- Police Speeding Fines - Police 1 - speedfighter23 0

..... but the driver who was blocked (orange car) remains in the middle lane after overtaking the mercedes. That car also crossed the solid white line to get to lane 2 rather than waiting till it becomes a broken line. Many is the time that I want to get to lane 2 right away (as there are slow vehicles in lane 1) and by the time I wait till I've got to the end of the solid line, some impatient numpty has already pulled out and is starting to accelerate past me. All too many people do both (go to lane 2 too early, and just go to lane 2 come what may, regardless of what is or isn't in lane 1) at that junction. |

The solid white line has no statutory meaning according to the office who prosecuted this offence (via his own twitter feed).

Well here’s another link for you on the subject, I’ll dig out the reference to the solid white line next.

A single solid white line does not of itself convey any rule or restriction. It might indicate that most traffic might not be permitted to be on one or other sides of the line (e.g. bus lanes, hard shoulders, etc.).
chevrons surrounded by a solid white line is a prescribed sign. I do not believe that the single white line extending from the chevronned area is prescribed as part of that sign. -------------------- Andy

Here you are CP solid white line has no legal status QUOTE It feels wrong to drive over it, and that’s it intention. Very similar to when councils put a broken chevron area to dissuade overtaking on single carriageways. I may have to modify my behaviour at that junction in future |

Ive just come back from driving 600 miles (by motorbike) through Holland Belgium and Luxembourg. Some comments.
Our continental friends hog the middle lane the same as we do. Especially when traffic is light and nobody is inconvenienced (ie the situation described way back in the original post). But they are more inclined than we are to pull into the slow lane if traffic is moderate. If traffic is heavy all bets are off and again they drive like us - either staying in lanes when they shouldn't or lane swapping left and right to try and gain some advantage. (Dunno whether they have lane hogging rules in those 3 countries by the way) Mike ...... and I also realised another sensible reason for staying in the middle lane. When it's very windy/blustery, it makes sense for a motorcyclist to remain in the centre of the middle lane to mitigate the danger of being blown left or right. Mike |

When driving in France a few years ago, I noticed that they did similar to the Brits - sat in the right hand lane when not overtaking, but for some reason it seemed to work.
