FightBack Forums _ Website Design _ Uploads now available to all members

As a result of a server upgrade we're now able to allow all registered Members to upload pictures (and other files) directly into their posts, in addition to the current method of embedding pictures hosted remotely. To start with this will be limited to 2Mb in total, and we may remove uploaded files more than 2 years old if necessary to free up space.

You can manage your attachments in http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=00 if necessary to stay within your limit.

I don't know how moderators and administrators feel, but as a casual observer, I think allowing 'newbies' the ability to upload pictures has been a retrograde step. It was possibly 'bad enough' when having to constantly point new members to the 'How to post and image guide' in the FAQ. This is still happening, only now there is an additional need to help people who run out of 1.95MB of space in two or three pictures, which let's face it, is barely enough for a PCN let alone four sides of an NtO.

In my opinion, and I am willing to be countered on this, but we were better off when uploads for non-members was switched off. Leave the ability to upload for the members (I realise I am not one! happy.gif ), who are more likely to make effective use of it. Rather than share the space bonanza from the server upgrade amongst everyone, giving them not quite enough space to do what they expect they should be able to do, share the space amongst the members who can use it to keep important documents available within the PePiPoo, and to pass larger important documents between members using the PM system.

Those that know what they're doing can get fit a lot of documents into 2 megs. However, they aren't he ones that will be needing help.

Personally, I believe that allowing users to change font, text size and colour was a far worse 'improvement'.

I think the fact that newbies can upload images is a feather in PePiPoo's cap. Most people coming here for help are newbies and we need to see their documents and photos to be able to offer them quality advice. PePiPoo is the best parking/traffic forum site because of the all round quality be it, site design, moderators or members alike.

The only improvement I'd like to see is a way of knowing which threads I've posted in at a glance. CAG has a tick next to the thread title if you've posted within it and this helps me to follow the thread. I'm not very IT literate and perhaps PePiPoo already has such a thing without me ever having realised it?

Bogsy PePiPoo already does that :

A topic you have posted in appears thus : , rather than : .

Anyhow, whilst I agree with you, the small allocation means it doesn't really cover the usual needs. Especially as most of the people using it will upload raw scans or photo images that are typically a couple of MB per image. The more computer literate amongst us would know how to use something like MSPaint to trim the files down, or i_view to increase the JPG compression to get the image down to a few 10s of KB. A newbie who struggles to upload an image to here or to TinyPic or PhotoBucket would not necessarily know enough to make the most of 1.95MB. Consequently they get to upload the front side of a PCN, and then complain they can't upload the back when asked to because there isn't enough space left and we have to direct them to the TinyPic hosting technique instead. It was just my observation that it might be better to carry on directing them to TinyPic in the first place, as was done before.

Thanks M.....I never knew that.

I suppose if I looked at it from an IT angle my view would differ. I've never uploaded anything and I'd struggle if I had to. I can get my head round the complexities of the TSRGD, RTRA 1984 and TMA etc etc but ask me anything IT related and I've not got a clue.
