Wife winding you up? Neighbour keeps parking outside your house? Mother in law nagging you? Kids off the next street kicking footballs against your fence? Then just buy a ´driverless car´ and skittle them over then blame Johnny, the law commission has just come up with a proposal that redifines the ´driver´ as a user in charge but not legally accountable, just blame Johnny (if you know you know)

But that is the issue, you can be in the car in charge but not legally be liable if Johnny ´accidently´ swerves off the road |

But that is the issue, you can be in the car in charge but not legally be liable if Johnny ´accidently´ swerves off the road I'm assuming from the quotation marks that by 'accidentally' you mean 'under the control of the driver. If so, that doesn't count as being an autonomous vehicle and the driver will be liable. It's all explained in the report you didn't read. This is not about 'driver support' systems like the ones currently employed in Tesla's. An autonomous vehicle is one where the occupants of the vehicle have no control over the car while it is in that mode. As long as it's possible to establish what mode the car was in at any given time (and that will certainly be a requirement if legal liability depends on it) then it won't be possible to 'skittle' anyone deliberately while the car is driving autonomously. |

If you mean where you suggested running the neighbours kids over, yes, I was aware that was tongue in cheek. If you mean the comment (which I replied to) where you said "But that is the issue, you can be in the car in charge but not legally be liable" then no, it wasn't obvious to me that it was a joke. Maybe you need to tweak the punchline? |

Shows us on the doll Spankdix where the nasty man touched you That's better! Use other peoples lines! Give yourself a fighting chance of being funny... What makes you think I wasn´t the original author of such a witty phrase? |

What makes you think I wasn´t the original author This. witty phrase A person is talented only when he has the talent to express his talent. So Spankdix what are you talented in other than trying to appear erudite on an internet webpage This post has been edited by klx250s: Wed, 26 Jan 2022 - 12:03 |

Given the woeful inability of tech companies to implement secure systems, I can easily see a new way for murder by hire. Just pay some techy in foreign parts to hack the car and drive it into the Mother-in-Law (or other target).

Exactly, when Joe Bloggs can buy off EBay a box of magic for 8 quid that lets him drive away in a 70 grand motor in 5 seconds, pretty sure a hacker could remotely drive the vehicle over your nagging missis. If Boeing's experience with fly by wire on 737s is anything to go by, will not need a hacker from the dark side, chances are the driverless car will take it into its own head to attach someone anyway.

The Law Commissions report also recommends making it a specific offence to interfere with the software or sensors on these cars. Unless they can be hacked in a way that’s completely invisible (unlikely, given that they’re effectively a closed system - easy to just check the hash on the firmware) then it’s going to be obvious you’ve done something, even if it’s not obvious what.
And there are easier ways to kill someone. |
