I got a ticket that came through the post last thursday telling me i got done for speeding back in july. So i called the safety camera unit in that area asking if it's invalid because it came so late. And they told me that it came so late because i didn't change my address on my V5C document and that i should do that immediately as well as fill out the form on the back of the NIP and send them both off. So i did that friday and sent it via next day delivery. And am waiting to hear back. I'm just curious on what is most likely to happen next? I was speeding on a dual-carriage way (70mph) doing 89 mph. And i currently have no weekly income because i'm studying. I've also only been driving for just under 2 years (2 years in december). And i really can't afford to lose my licence, i haven't had any previous speeding offences in the past.

On the presumption you did contribute to the ‘late’ NIP by failing to update your v5 then you’ve been lucky in some ways as you may have been prosecuted for a more serious offence and received 6 points which would revoke your licence.

On the assumption you do not have such a ‘late’ defence then you should see a fixed penalty of 3 points £100 if you were driving at 89 in a vehicle allowed to do 70.

You may have no income but fixed penalties are, well, fixed. Going to court will cost you more as there’s a minimum income used along with costs and a surcharge although you may be allowed a payment schedule. But that excess would be more than 3 points.

If you want to avoid revocation and fines then you may wish to consider regulating your speed. Also, update your v5 if you haven’t already as that is a separate offence the police now seem aware of...

Check when your insurance needs notifying - this will have an impact on your premium.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I haven't heard anything back from them yet. How long does it usually take them to respond to a NIP? Thanks

Couple of weeks would not be unusual.
