hi All,
I have received a speeding ticket to go on 59mph in the AVERAGE SPEED area of 50mph on Dec 25 morning. The traffic was quiet due to Xmas holiday otherwise even the 30mph is not possible. The speed was calculated between two cameras a406 west of bounds green road n11 to a406 east of a1000 n12. The first avg speed sign is on the First camera and 2nd avg speed sign is on the second camera and every single sign in between is 50mph with no average speed mentioned. As soon as I see the 50mph sign, I thought the avg speed is over and I increased the speed ( I would say slightly based on 10% + 1mph). Now, my point here is that these signs are not clear, either their shouldn't be any sign of 50 or it should be with avg speed together or at least a reminder that this is an average speed zone (like most of the other average speed zone). Is it worth to appeal this? |

There is no "average speed limit", only a normal speed limit - in your case 50 mph - measured by an "average speed" camera system.
The "average" refers to the method of speed detection. An average speed in excess of 50 proves that the vehicle must have exceeded 50 at some point in the measurement zone. Even if your average speed is below 50, it is still an offence to exceed 50 at any time, although the "average" camera system will not detect it. There is no requirement for camera warning signs of any description. |

Do you own the car, and if so when did you register it and have you moved recently?

Of course it is not worth appealing it, the speed limit is 50mph, you were caught going faster and that is the end of the matter. The fact that you were caught on the basis of your average speed instead of your speed at a particular point has nothing to do with it.

You need to give the details and 59mph in 50 would probably qualify for a course which is probably the best idea if offered, otherwise it most likely be an offer of a fixed penalty, which would be 3 points and unless you have 9 already on the licence would be your best option.

Public holidays seem to be popular days for speed cameras, less traffic about, easy to spot one car breaking the limit.
