This is not your usual no insurance question.

In September 2017 I took out a car insurance policy to be paid for monthly. In September 2018 I was invited to renew the policy which I did.

Now I’ve doing my accounts for that financial year 2017/18 but I cant find any record of paying the insurance premiums!

I haven’t had any communications from the company to state that I’d defaulted, I never had the insurance cancelled, never got stopped for no insurance and as I said was invited to renew.

I have searched both bank and credit card statements and cannot find any record of payment.

Now as far as I know Insurance companies don’t usually continue to insure someone if they haven’t paid the premiums.

The premiums from this years insurance show up on my statements.

So do I contact the insurance company or do I just leave it and not put insurance in my tax returns?

So do I contact the insurance company

YES.

Tax return isn't going to be your primary issue.

You can also check on MID here.

So the premiums do or do not show on your statements?
Have you checked askMID to see whether the car is showing as insured?
Edit:- I see now that you were referring to no payment taken for last year. Apologies.

The cars were always insured, in fact during the policy, I changed cars and insured the new one through the insurance companies website. Was also able to tax the cars, which if I wouldn’t have been able to if there was no insurance.

When paying insurance by instalments, it is normally by way of a loan from a third party (such as Premium Finance), so the monthly payments wouldn't necessarily be in the name of the insurer.

First check on askmid if a policy is in force. If it is, you're insured under the RTA regardless of any admin errors that might have occurred with the collection of payments. Then, contact the insurance company.

As an aside, the cost of paying in instalments is often as high as 30%, so using a zero interest credit card to pay a single annual premium can be a better way of doing things.

Can't see an issue with insurance, it is historical, seems to have had no repercussions and if they decided to cancel now, their error anyway and can be argued.
I would let sleeping dogs lie on that one.

Financial. You do owe insurance (or more likely loan provider) for the premiums.
Can fess up and pay or let sleeping dogs lie.
6 years (IIRC) for them to claim from you if they find the error.

HMRC, cannot claim for payments not made.
Can be shown in books as an outstanding debt but don't think HMRC are interested in that for individuals.

Apart from showing that the car is currently insured (or not) what will AskMid show about last year's policy, the one under discussion ?

Found it eventually, I'd paid on a credit card in one lump sum. One entry amongst many transactions on the statement!
