Hi
First post, not sure whether to put this here or in the tech. discussions. Simple question really. Do mobile speed camera vans record audio? And if they do, can audio alone be used as any form of evidence for an offence. I ask as I passed a van recently at the speed limit and then accelerated hard once completely out of sight of the van. I have a loud exhaust and realised I was being stupid as I was doing it... Thanks Bertie |

There is no way the sound could prove your speed anyway, but in any event I believe the answer to your question is no.

Appreciated - and was the conclusion I was coming to after scouring t'Internet. I was more thinking linking it to some other offence such as due care and attention rather than speed. If anyone knows definitively whether sound is recorded, a further reply here would put my mind at rest.

The speed you are going at and any noise you are making are two seperate issues each with their own specs . If you are driving in excess of the speed limit you can fall foul of various devices ,static and mobile but if your exhaust is particularly noisy then only the personnel in the latter might take an interest to see if it meets or fails current requirements . Even if you are adhering to the speed limit you could be stopped because of your exhaust. |

Even if sound is recorded and analysed to the nth degree, what would it prove?
That you revved the engine. Or someone else nearby did. Revs do not equate directly with speed, there is gearing and the like that breaks any direct correlation. When you have a lovely V8 engine that sounds wonderful in the tunnels under Birmingham centre, it is very tempting to go through in 2nd gear, just to hear the song. Wife would moan about me speeding. But never did if I stayed in 3rd/4th at same speed or even higher. Noise can make people believe you are speeding but cannot be used to prove it. |
