Son is in the building trade and only needing to carry tools, bought himself a car based Fiesta van as it was plenty big enough for his tools and was for his social and domestic use as well.
Anyway, times changed and his boss wanted him to start carrying some materials to jobs as well, and was given two choices, 1/ Buy himself a suitably sized van (Transit, Vivaro size van). 2/ Rent a signwritten van off the company of a suitable size. Anyway, he decided to rent a van off the firm for reasons such as no worries about repairs, maintenance, breakdowns or not starting in the mornings (his fiesta van was now 8yrs old and doing a lot of miles every day, sometimes well over 100 miles) and didn't want a full size van of his own for his own use. But the firms van was strictly only for work use due to tax and insurance reasons. He therefore decided to keep the fiesta van for his own social and domestic use as he doesn't need a back seat, is a good muddy dog carrier, and has been a reliable workhorse, and as an oldish, high mileage van wouldn't be worth much, but would cost a lot to replace with a car, with his SDP miles only around 2 to 3,000 a year. It is taxed a lot higher than its equivalent car version (its currently £250 a year) and as its no longer used as a "commercial" vehicle but purely SDP is there a way of getting the VED down to a domestic car level which it is now used as ? Only be changing it physically to either a dual purpose or car qualifying vehicle.

IIRC correctly, seats and windows need adding.
But check this. Was common with things like mini vans in the past |

as silly as it sounds , ford transit connects sent from factory in (think) belgium to the USA has side glass fitted and rear seats , once they arrive glass is removed , seats taken out , its a trick to get past a 55 yr old rule on van tax https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45875405

An interesting case as my partner has a 63 Discovery commercial, with no rear seats, back windows intact but factory fitted screens inside, and it's much cheaper VED than the car version. It can also go in the London LEZ as it's classed as a low emission commercial van! the only downside it she has to pay van rate on the Dartford Crossing!

I thought the issue with LEZ and Discoveries was the other way round??? Some classed as cars (m1) and thus exempt from LEZ, some classed as vans and thus liable. Even though both exactly the same vehicle/engine and only difference is how the original dealer registered them. |

No, the van version of the Disco commercial (factory fitted with floor at the back, 2 seats, cage behind driver, back windows blacked out) is classed as a low emission van, so not only lower VED than the car version, but as I said, can go in the LEZ for free. VED is about £21 a month.

Thats a bit galling that the VED is the same as my son's tiny 1.4 Fiesta van and according to TFL checker is not exampt from the ULEZ charge but, strangely IS exempt from the T-Charge. -------------------- Diesel, the fuel of the future......

Why not just swap it for an equivalent car? I'm not in the market for a Fiesta but I'd imagine the van is worth as least as much as the car what with all the Amazon couriers about.
