Received a NIP today for an alleged speeding offence on 31/7/22.
Letter claims I was doing 58 in a 50 (average camera area). Is it worth contesting? I am confident I wasn’t as I know that area and am sure I had cruise engaged, especially as cameras are obvious and well signposted, but I have no proof. I’ve downloaded the camera calibration certificate and it’s within Cal. This is North Wales Police area. I’ve had a clean license for nearly 20 years so this is a real kick in the teeth. Shall I just return the NIP and hope for a driver awareness course, or will 58 be an automatic 3 points? |

Average speed cameras are by their very nature unlikely to return incorrect speeds, if the distances between the cameras are accurate then when passing two of them is a simple distance/time calculation. If the system was set up wrong then there would be a large number of false detection and would likely become known very quickly.
It might be worth asking for "photographs to aid with the identification of driver", might show something. Contesting it in court could become very expensive, if the prosecution bring in an expert witness, costs escalate. That speed is well within the range for a speed awareness course. |

I’ve had a clean license for nearly 20 years so this is a real kick in the teeth. Shall I just return the NIP and hope for a driver awareness course, or will 58 be an automatic 3 points? Courses are offered for speeds between limit +10%+2mph to limit +10%+9mph, so 57 to 64 in a 50. So no kick in the teeth as your licence will stay clean. No need to 'hope' really, the offering of courses is very much by the numbers and (assuming you haven't done one in the last 3 years which your post suggests is unlikely) you will be offered one. As above, average speed cameras are very reliable, I don't recall (I will admit I don't have 'Total Recall') a single successful challenge, odds are that you were doing the alleged speed. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

Thanks for the reply… sorry if I’m been a bit thick, if the limit is 50, then I thought the 10% +2 would be 57, but where does the 64 come from? It’s probably obvious and I’m likely stressed so it’s not computing in my head right now, but if there’s a chance I’ll get offered a course instead of points then I’ll definitely not contest it. |

Limit + 10% + 9mph. The upper limit for a course.
