I was caught speeding in Switzerland in July, had a form asking for the drivers details to my name & address (registered keeper) come through in November. I filled this in and a fine has been produced, arriving 27th Dec (happy Christmas!). The first letter had German and English, but the second letter only has German, so I've no idea what it says! Apart from the fine is fairly obvious (has a big TOTAL mark)
It's for 136kph in an 80kph, which is then reduced to 130kph due to adjustments. Fine is 2700CHF, approx £2050. No salary was given etc. What are my options? TIA |

Right, but I've already said I want to pay. I broke the law, so I should pay. I also would like to visit Switzerland again, and who knows in the future what else it could limit me from. The fine is the fine, how do you know they discount them? Clearly if you've got one and not paid, you'd not be going back. I have asked for a discount due to affordability but they are having none of it. My concern is not the money, I've written it off now. My concern is what I maybe agreeing to by making a payment. Going back over all the posts the original amount mentioned was "discounted" in that the CHF6000 is in abeyance if the fine and fee are paid. It seems odd that you have now been offered the chance to challenge at this late stage as that point appeared to have passed last year when you failed to respond. You have been honest, admitted the offence and are willing to pay so why not do it? It's doubtful the Swiss will not be following correct procedures for the paperwork. Requiring correspondence to be in English seems to be counterproductive because, if you really need it, any translation app will provide that if you do not want to pay for a professional translation service. Oh, I have no reservations about paying it. I got done, so it's only fair. Had I know quite how much they'd be if I was caught speeding, I probably would have stuck to the speed limit religiously, I suppose that's what they want! You make sense though, I will just process it through a translator to just ensure I'm not admitting I like sodomy or something random! |

Half way through now, trying not to think about it. |

Well well well, seems I have a job offer that requires visits to the head office in, can you guess....?
Switzerland! I will be printing proof of settlement of the fine, I don't really want to be pulled and detained at the airport! |

I'm surprised they didn't ban you from driving in CH as well tbh. I live in CH and hear the horror stories from colleagues that are cross border commuters.
One case a 3000chf fine guy undertook due to slowing traffic in the LH lane, he exited late and clipped the sud white line. Off duty cop reported him and he had a 4 month driving ban. Similar bans also for non cross border commuters. Going thru the thread even though its now done with maybe some useful info's for future.. ASTRA is the official testing and certification house for road and transport. cameras are approved and tested by ASTRA. Depending on the detection device used they allocate an error allowance margin. Radar laser etc. If you can not pay the fine due to financial circumstances you can choose to spend the day in prison, you go in the morning and come out in the evening, I normally see them being released about 6pm AFAIK this is only for Swiss residents. Higher offences are also subject to a probation period of 2 years where a higher fine will be imposed and normally Inc another ban. Court fees are added to the fine when it's X kms above the limit and when banned the Cantonal licensing dept will issue a further "admin fee" of hundreds of francs to remove the licence. I see its from kanton Bern, would it have been the 80 section highway going through the city? This post has been edited by fluff34567: Thu, 24 Oct 2019 - 15:15 |

Intersting stuff.
It wasn't a highway, it was the tail end of a mountain pass, nice straight bit of single carriageway that opened up just enough to get past. Can't rememeber exactly where. |

If the fine is a few thousand quid, taking a day off work to sit in a cell doing nothing seems like a bargain. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

Funnily enough I was going to mention that passes and roads outside of cities are in general 80kmh. Your indicated speed must have been over 140! I bet the cops wished it had been a Swiss car If you can not pay the fine due to financial circumstances you can choose to spend the day in prison, you go in the morning and come out in the evening, I normally see them being released about 6pm AFAIK this is only for Swiss residents. Oh it's not that simple, it's a daily rate, from memory it's 160 chf per day so if your fine is 1600 you go back for 10 days! I know someone who did this but next time he had to Order a criminal record extract, something very normal here BTW it was recorded he had spent x days in prison which wasn't good. |
