Hi all, one of my friend recommended this website.

I hope I am positing this in the correct forum.

Three days ago, someone crashed into the back of my car. We both stopped and got out of the car.
I was in a shock and before I have exchanged the details, there was a police van behind the other persons car.
The police van pulled forward and the officer asked us to park the cars on the side and exchange details, just to avoid blocking traffic.

I got back into the car and parked on the side of the road. The other driver got back into the car and drove away.

I have reported to police on the website and have received a reference number.
I have not reported to the insurance company as of now.

But, I took to car to a repair centre to get an estimate. They also have a back office who deals with accident claims etc.
They have registered a claim and asked me to find if I can get any evidence and they will take care of repair, claim etc.

Now, I am not sure...if I still need to report to my insurance company. Or leave it with the repair centre claims team.
Also, there was a car garage on that road and they have CCTV outside. But, they can only release the CCTV footage to Police and they cannot give it to me.

I need some advise on how to proceed further. Please advise.

As there was a Police van when the accident happened, can I contact Police to provide evidence, if I cannot get the CCTV?

Any advise is appreciated.

Many thanks.

No. Quite how you thought this was a technical question about enforcement devices is a mystery.

Yes you do need to inform them. As it almost certainly tells you in the Policy documentation.

The garage can release the CCTV to you, they just don't want to because they think it's less hassle to tell you to go away than apply their tiny minds to the relevant GDPR exemptions. You could pick a fight with them, but frankly if you just let your insurance company handle it it'll be far easier as they'll be used to dealing with this sort of thing all the time.

You should therefore tell both the police and the insurance company that the garage has this CCTV. Chances are that if either the police turn up in person, or the insurance company sends a letter through their solicitors demanding the CCTV, the garage will hand it over.

If you just leave it, the risk is that the CCTV footage gets overwritten before too long, so I would press both the police and the insurance company to try and get it.

When the other party drove off, did the police in attendance not do something themselves? Or did they just tell you to report it via the website, despite there being police witness of the hit and run (at east the "run" part)?

If it's in London it's official policy dictated by Mayor Khan (unless it's changed recently) for the police not to get involved unless there's injury. I had a hit and run, with CCTV, witnesses, photographs, the whole 9 yards, and the police said: we don't investigate h&r anymore, it's official policy. In other words, your insurance company will have to deal with it.

Really! There is a woman who lives near us who is disabled, she is a bit of a trouble maker. When a delivery van hit her car, no one injured, the Police turned up to sort things out.

Thanks. Insurance company has requested the garage for CCTV footage, awaiting feedback.

Police informed us to move and park on the side to exchange details. They have left before I parked on the side and other driver drove away.

Let me find the letter I received from the Metropolitan Police, if I can. However, this was a couple of years ago, maybe they began doing it again?
