Also any advise on hire firms would be appreciated Ta PMB I know a few people who's hired cars in the US and nobody ever mentioned anything special about insurance. It normally just comes included in the cost of hiring the car. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

What I am reading seems to suggest it is a pretty basic package that is included and you need to re enforce it with an additional package -------------------- All advice is given freely. You do.
We went to FLA in October with a Virgin package. Thankfully, everything, including full CDW, etc., cover was included. However, I am aware of high insurance add-ons which a lot of people get around by buying a policy in the UK. If you arrange the hire through someone like holidayautos.com, you'll normally be quoted the price including all the required insurance, including CDW. There will be the usual excess, which can be mitigated by taking out additional insurance (where it's always cheaper to do it yourself in advance with a 3rd party insurer than when you pick up the car).
If you hire direct with a rental company, it probably won't include sufficient insurance. US car insurance works differently from here. If you live in the US, have a US insurance policy to drive your US car, that normally provides a level of cover for rental cars. Which is why the default level of insurance offered when you hire a car is less than it is in the UK. |

Don't know about US Hire Companies specifically, but most UK/EU hire Co's won't recognise 3rd Party Insurance, and either charge more for the rental, or load your Credit Card to cover for any damage. |

I don't think it was being suggested that this was "3rd party insurance cover" as such, simply a policy which covers the excess imposed by the hire company's policy. I always take out this cover when hiring a car overseas. Very inexpensive (as in about £14 the last time) and also covers you for the claim (usually a few weeks after returning the vehicle) that there was damage to the car such as a small scratch which hadn't been noted on the hire form. |
