Hi to everyone tongue.gif .

Has anyone seen the new cameras on blue bell hill Kent? Large poles cranked 90 degrees at the top, poles seem way to big for the small camers.

Cameras are small white and seem to have little aerials out of the top of each one, pole on the upside seems to have a small sub station/box affair that again seems way to large for the job.

Two poles upside and two on the downside.

More to the point what are thay for?just anpr or similiar?

There is no requirement to paint a camera yellow, approved or not.

I saw these earlier, they are on both sides of the road. Going uphill is going to be really quite tedious now.

If they are average speed checkers over a set distance, and the limit is 70mph throughout, does that mean a vehicle would need to average 79mph to be flashed? (10% + 2mph) ? I've always wondered how fast you'd need to be going, as an average, before you're caught.

EDIT: Just noticed these are along the M20 around Maidstone as well, on most of the overhead signs.

I whizz up and down there on a daily basis and have not heard a thing. I was under the impression they were traffic webcams, but just looked on the KCC site and they ain't! I shall whizz more slowly in future!

A note that these are also on the A2/M2 around Maidstone all the way up to Gravesend and also on the M20 around the same towns. I actually moved away from Maidstone because I'm sick of all these cameras the council have erected, £20,000 a pop and not even approved yet. On my travels I've counted 28 of them in this area.

Everytime I drive past these (sometimes 4 times a day) this bugs me. I've just been onto the Kent Safety Scamera website, and they are not showing on the map on there!

So, I phoned them and they said they have had loads of calls about them, but they have nothing to do with them, they are not safety cameras and in fact belong to Kent Police and are for monitoring traffic. I argued that they don't show as traffic webcams online and the scameras reply is that they have no laws obliging them to be shown, unlike speed scameras.

Not convinced I totally trust the answer, but it's the best I have at the moment.

They wouldn't be for traffic surveys would they- i.e. monitering the flow of traffic and how busy the roads are in order to schedule upgrades/ best times to carry out repairs

I'd be interested in finding out more about this - they are literally everywhere, A2, M2, M20, M26 even. Isn't this a red herring (from the KMSCP website):

QUOTE
M20 cameras J4 - J7

This system of variable speed limits enforced by cameras is not the responsibility of the K&MSCP. Please contact the Highways Agency directly on 08457 50 40 30.

Would it be possible to find out the exact purpose of these cameras through a FoI request? Since the SCP deny ownership I assume one would need to go to the Police direct. The above cameras are presumably rear-facing gantry cameras with the lines in the road, not the SPIKE ones that are appearing everywhere.

Also, rather interestingly, KMSCP list the mobile sites here on their map:

http://www.kmscp.org/cameras_page04.html

Are they 'permitted' to place these mobile camera vans anywhere? I assume they are, but thinking about it, I've only ever seen them at the locations given.
