Thought I would post this up.
2 years ago I absent mindedly ran a red light on the second of three sets of traffic lights on a roundabout. An oncoming car on a green light coming onto the roundabout rear quartered me as I was driving away just before I got to my exit causing me to spin out and then get plowed along in a T bone situation. My car was written off, no injuries to myself and no passengers in either car, fair amount of damage to the other car which hit me (though it drove away basically intact) and she later claimed for whiplash and wrist pain. Outcome was a 1 day safe and considerate driving course which cost about £175 and involved half a day in the classroom and an hour and a half or so in a driving school car.

Good question. All I know is the claim for car damage (including writing mine off) and injury totalled about £12k and is now settled.
It hasn't made much difference to my insurance. Managed to renew with someone else for less than I could find the year before with no accidents to declare.

Assuming you disclosed the at-fault claim, the only thing I can conclude is you were being properly being ripped off before.

Perhaps. I always get quotes through all of the major comparison sites and go with the lowest quote which meets my needs. I did some experimental quotes in case I ended up with points back in 2018 and it seemed to me that the points made far more difference than an accident to premium. This year, 2 yrs after the claim I'm down to £250 for the year fully comp with all the extras (breakdown, windscreen etc), cars group 18 or something, Merc C250 TD and I'm 31.

You're in a "sensible" age bracket, premiums seem to drop off quite a bit once you pass 30.

Yes I definitely picked the right time to start messing up my previously good driving record. I was squeaky clean up to age 25 then it all started unravelling but I'm trying hard to avoid any further driving mishaps. The awareness course I went on definitely helped. I recently bought a reliant scimitar GTE 3.0 just because they're still cheap-ish and I missed my Capri laser (but not the body rust) which was my first car in 2006... how things have changed- the scimitar is tax and MOT exempt and costs £80 a year fully comp with full breakdown recovery. I think in many ways your 30's onwards are the best years.
