NIP Details and Circumstances
What is the name of the Constabulary? - Date of the offence: - January 2019 Date of the NIP: - 3 days after the offence Date you received the NIP: - 4 days after the offence Location of offence (exact location as it appears on the NIP: important): - A55 Rhuallt Westbound Zone 1, Denbighshire Was the NIP addressed to you? - Yes Was the NIP sent by first class post, second class or recorded delivery? - First If your are not the Registered Keeper, what is your relationship to the vehicle? - How many current points do you have? - 3 Provide a description of events (if you know what happened) telling us as much about the incident as possible - some things that may seem trivial to you may be important, so don't leave anything out. Please do not post personal details for obvious reasons - Was travelling through a known new camera zone. Had slowed down to about approx 60mph I was in convoy with other slower traffic with other lane having lots vehicles passing me going much faster. I was surprised to receive NIP saying I was travelling at 79mph. I’m positive I was going at most 60mph as it’s a downhill stretch and never usually go more than 60-65 down it. I believe they are new cameras that measure your speed by how quickly you reach each post. Is it possible that the cameras picked up other speeder and my vehicle was identified in error? I’ve heard of that happening. NIP Wizard Responses These were the responses used by the Wizard to arrive at its recommendation: Have you received a NIP? - Yes Are you the Registered Keeper of the vehicle concerned (is your name and address on the V5/V5C)? - Yes Did the first NIP arrive within 14 days? - Yes Although you are the Registered Keeper, were you also the keeper of the vehicle concerned (the person normally responsible for it) at the time of the alleged offence? - Yes Were you driving? - Yes Which country did the alleged offence take place in? - Wales NIP Wizard Recommendation Based on these responses the Wizard suggested that this course of action should be considered:

Average speed systems which are present at the location are extremely accurate and I can't recall a case where either a wrong speed or misidentification has occurred. Is it possible you missed seeing the first camera and ended up speeding between an active section?

I may have done. Didn’t think I had though. But, if cameras are correct I’ll have to accept that I must’ve been flashed before I slowed down.

OP. You seem to be confusing two types of speed detection systems.
SPECS average speed systems don't flash, and simply timestamp your vehicle (identified by VRN) at two or more different points over a known distance. Your average speed between those points can then be calculated. Because each vehicle is identified by VRN, it's almost impossible (we've never seen it here) for a misread to happen. GATSO and other cameras measure your speed at a particular point. They do flash. Misreads can and do occasionally happen. So what were you caught by? I’ve heard of that happening. [/b] Your description sounds like an average speed camera system, as noted it notes the time your car (using ANPR on the number plate) passes two cameras, so it knows elapsed time and already knows the distance and can then work out your speed between the two cameras, as it uses your registration number its almost impossible to get the 'wrong car' as that would mean either a car carrying the same reg number (cloned) passed at the same time as you (unlikely in the extreme) or it misread another number plate (which can happen) but happened to read it as yours as you were passing (very unlikely) and in the right few second time slot to come up with a plausible speed (millions to one against chance). As also noted, because of how they work average speed camera systems either work or don't, inaccuracies in a recorded speed are, by the design of the system, almost impossible to achieve, the only way is if the distance between two cameras was miss-set, but then the Police would soon figure the mistake when they got every car speeding! -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!
