Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help?

I didn't think the cameras on the M3 worked unless the variable speed limit was in activation.

Today was flashed twice at around 93.......

If they are working any steer on likely fine and point?

Thanks very much

Do you mean you were flashed twice by a camera at a single location, or were flashed by two different cameras?

At 93 you are eligible for a fixed penalty notice, providing you don't have too many points already. If you were caught by two cameras in very close proximity and you get two FPNs, you could ask for the two to be treated as a single incident, there's no guarantee they will accept that, but they might.

Thanks for the super quick reply.

Sorry by flashed twice, I meant the gantry with the camera flashed twice so only one episode.
Ok so you think I will only get three points and fine? It's my first ever offence in 20 years.

Cheers

Yes they work all the time.

Yes you were al,out certainly caught, as the actual speed was probably 91-93 and below the 95moh guideline it's odds on a fixed penalty will be offered.

They have been flashing regularly since the works and 50 limit were lifted.

I know of two people who saw them flash when they went past at around 85 when there was no VSL in place and 75-80 when there was a 60 VSL in place. Neither has received a NIP and that was 4 weeks ago.

I have only heard of one person who claims they have received a NIP from the M3 cameras and that hasn't been verified.

Make of that what you will, but please report back if you receive a NIP.

79mph is the starting point for enforcement. Only the 2 week wait will confirm for sure.

It's only the starting point IF they have been configured to trigger at that speed.

I have seen no evidence to suggest they are set that low. The one person who claimed to have got a NIP for 82mph didn't provide any evidence and personally I think they made it up.

It's entirely up to you of course whether you want to risk it, but I'm happy going past them at a speed which keeps with the flow and that's often in the 80-85 region.

What's the phrase I'm looking for? Ah, yes, 'Past performance is not a guide to future performance'.

If you're happy to go above the enforcement threshold then you'll be 'happy' to be caught. Going with the flow isn't a defence.

I agree completely. In fact, just after they were installed I saw one flash as I passed at 85 or so and although I was a bit miffed, I accepted my fate and waited for the NIP which never arrived. They were flashing regularly at that time, but more recently they've obviously 'settled down' and seem to be behaving the same way as the other HADECS3s on the southern M25, which I also use regularly.

It's a personal choice. However, I do not see the point in spreading FUD around when it comes to these things.
What that leads to is motorists stamping on the brakes when they are travelling slightly above the limit and catch sight of a camera at the last minute and I do not believe that is helpful.

The way the M25 HADECS3s are configured, you will get caught around 100mph and over when the NSL applies, but they are much more strict during a VSL and I think that approach is very sensible. I'm not saying that's how the M3 HADECS3s are set, as I haven't seen enough data yet, so time will tell.

But it's all my personal opinion and please don't follow my advice if you are risk averse!

Please describe circumstances i.e. date, time, exact location, other vehicles around you, limit in place at the time. It all helps us to determine what your chances are.

Bear in mind there are 4 lanes being covered by these cameras in many places so just because you see a flash (double flash, in fact) doesn't mean it's your car that's exceeded the threshold.

If you really were travelling at 79 with no TSL in effect, I don't think you have much to worry about.

No, please don't - or not in somebody else's thread, anyway.

Most speedos are set fast so 80-85 isnt really that infact one car ive got is a full 5mph fast but i always use more accurate gps speed and cruise at true 77.You would have to be pretty foolish to travel more than 78mph on todays managed motorways,it is only a matter of time. The motorways have been turned into cash machines as promised and you dont need to look far here to see how much the rate of capture has gone up.

Good job someone came up with the idea of a separate course for speeding on the motorways. That must be a real learning curve.

Ollie Martins was P&CC for Bedfordshire and had no control over the M1 which comes under Highways England jurisdiction.

He also proposed, in a referendum, a 16% increase in Beds police precept which 70% turned down.

Highways England install the cameras. Bedfordshire police have autonomy on the enforcement with those cameras. Well, Beds, Herts and Cambs as they are now a triumvirate. Now you know.

Sorry guys, been away from my PC waiting next to my post box for the last 4 weeks.
Still no NIP, so I assume I am in the clear?

I have seen the camera's flashing away a few times on the M3 now (not at me), so all very odd.

Cheers

If you are the registered keeper at the time of DVLA enquiry then it seems you're in the clear.

Some might say a 'warning' flash has some effect. But the threshold may change in the future.

Yep I am the registered keeper, received a parking eye fine for an over stay in a car park last week within 3 days!

The warning flash has actually made me think, iv pedalled back my normal "cruising" speed on the motorway, so I guess its having the desired effect.
